7M Accountancy — Capital Gains Tax

Capital gains tax (CGT) rules in the UK apply to the profits made when you sell or dispose of an asset that has increased in value. We make sure you pay only what you owe and claim every relief you're entitled to.

SalepriceCost &improvementsAnnual exemptamount=Taxablegainthen × the CGT rate that applies to you = tax due
Working out a capital gain. Take the sale price, subtract what it cost you and your annual tax-free allowance — what's left is the taxable gain. We make sure every allowable deduction is claimed.

Tax rates

For most assets, gains are taxed at 18% within your basic-rate income band and 24% above it. Your main home is normally exempt. We work out the correct rate for your situation.

Annual exempt amount

Each individual has a tax-free allowance — currently £3,000 a year. We make sure your allowance is used so it isn't wasted, and time disposals well where we can.

Calculation of Gains

Gains are computed by subtracting the cost of acquiring and improving the asset from the amount you received when you sold or disposed of it.

Allowable Deductions

Deductible costs can include estate agent fees, solicitor fees and the cost of improvement works.

Exempt Assets

Certain assets are exempt, including your main residence, personal belongings worth £6,000 or less, and certain government securities.

Reporting & Payment

If you are liable for CGT, it generally needs to be reported in your self-assessment tax return — we handle the reporting for you.
